⚠ California SB 282 — New Heater Requirement Effective January 1, 2026
Under California SB 282, any new pool or spa installation, or the addition of a new heater to an existing pool, must use a heat pump, solar thermal system, or waste heat recovery system as the primary heat source. Gas heaters can no longer serve as the primary heat source on new or replacement installs. Existing gas heaters in place before January 1, 2026, are not required to be immediately replaced — they may continue to be repaired and maintained. Choosing the Right Heater for Northern California’s Climate
Our service area spans a significant climate range. Communities in the Sacramento foothills — El Dorado Hills, Granite Bay, Cameron Park, Shingle Springs — experience colder winters than Bay Area communities like Danville, Lafayette, Walnut Creek, and San Ramon. This matters when selecting a heat pump:
- Heat pumps perform best when ambient air temperatures stay above 50°F, making them an excellent year-round choice for the Bay Area and Central Valley. In the foothills, they may need supplemental heat during cold snaps.
- Hybrid heaters combine a heat pump with a gas backup, delivering heat pump efficiency in mild weather and gas speed when temperatures drop. This is often the ideal solution for foothills pools.
- Gas heaters on existing systems — if your gas heater was installed before January 1, 2026, you may continue to repair and maintain it. When it reaches end of life, replacement will need to comply with SB 282. We can help you plan ahead.
