Pool and Spa Filters | Crystal Clear Water Starts Here

Proper filtration is the foundation of a healthy, clear pool. Without the right filter — correctly sized for your pool volume and bather load — no amount of chemical balancing will keep your water sparkling. Pinnacle Pool & Spa Services installs and services the full Pentair filter lineup throughout Greater Sacramento and the Bay Area, and we size every filter correctly for your pool from day one.

Crystal clear pool water from proper filtration

Three Types of Pool Filters — Which Is Right for You?

Pentair offers three filtration technologies, each with distinct advantages depending on your pool, your lifestyle, and how much maintenance you prefer:

  • Cartridge Filters — The most popular choice for residential pools in California. No backwashing required: cartridges are periodically removed and cleaned, saving water. Excellent filtration capturing particles down to 10–15 microns. Low water waste and minimal valve operation make these our most common recommendation for Northern California homeowners.
  • Sand Filters — Durable, long-lasting, and low maintenance. Sand filters are backwashed to clean, making them a practical choice for larger pools with high bather loads or commercial applications. Filtration captures particles down to 20–40 microns.
  • Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) Filters — The finest filtration available, capturing particles as small as 3–5 microns. D.E. filters produce exceptionally clear water and are ideal for pools where water clarity is the top priority.

Signs Your Filter Needs Service or Replacement

Many pool owners don’t realize their filter is underperforming until water quality problems appear. Watch for these warning signs:

  • Cloudy or hazy water that doesn’t clear after chemical treatment
  • Pressure gauge running consistently high — a sign the filter media is clogged
  • Short filter cycles — pressure rises quickly after backwashing or cleaning
  • Visible debris returning to the pool through the return jets
  • Cartridges are 3–5 years old, or sand/D.E. media is 7+ years old
  • Cracked, torn, or deformed cartridges that no longer seat correctly

Correct Filter Sizing Matters

An undersized filter works overtime, fails prematurely, and produces poor water quality. An oversized filter may not generate enough flow to turn water over at the rate needed for proper sanitization. We assess your pool volume, turnover rate requirements, and pump output before recommending any filter — we don’t guess, and we don’t oversell. View the full Pentair filter lineup →
