The winter months have brought a cold snap that is forcing temperatures in the Bay Area to hover at or near freezing. Although you would be hard pressed to find anyone complaining about the amount of rainfall or cooler temperatures given the historic drought, here are some simple steps to take to winterize your pool and help navigate the chilliest of conditions — even in California!
- Clean debris out the pool and unclog strainer baskets outside of your weekly service appointment. This will ensure continuous circulation and avoid any potential freezing in the pool system overnight.
- Prevent algae especially for pools that are covered as it can stain the surface if left untreated. To help prevent algae growth over the winter months, a winter algaecide may be used. In warmer climates, a mid-winter application may be necessary if the temperature does not drop below freezing.
- Freeze control feature on many of the new pool pumps & automation systems will start the pump running if the outdoor temperature approaches freezing and will protect your pump, heater and plumbing from freezing and bursting. If you have older pumps the best thing to do is to run them at night during the freezing temperatures.
- Properly draining and shut down of pool solar is a service that we provide at the onset of the colder weather.
